For smaller operators, setting up a human factors and non-technical skills (HFNTS) training and assessment program can feel complex – especially if you think you need to build it yourself.

But it doesn’t have to be. Many operators use third-party or off-the-shelf training for some or all their HFNTS requirements.

Here’s how to do this.

Operators must ensure that:

  • training delivered is appropriate to your operations
  • content is appropriate for your personnel and their roles.

You may also wish to consider how you will supplement any third-party training with any induction or organisation-specific requirements.

To save time and avoid starting from scratch, Advisory Circular AC 119-12 Human factors principles and non-technical skills training and assessment for air transport operations explains:

  • who needs HFNTS training
  • what the training program needs to cover
  • what your responsibilities are as an operator
  • what records you must keep
  • how to document your approach in your exposition or manual (including sample text).

It also includes other options for delivery of HFNTS training, such as through using our Human factors safety behaviours for pilots resource kit as an acceptable means of compliance.
