  • Aircraft: MD Helicopters MD530F
  • Location: Near Superior, Arizona, US
  • Fatalities: 4
  • Helicopter flew into slackline (similar to tightrope, but loose) that had been raised across canyon. Tail boom detached after contact, all on board died. Slackline mentioned in current local NOTAM.

6 January

  • Aircraft: Cessna S550 Citation S/II
  • Location: San Juan de los Morros Airport, Venezuela
  • Fatalities: 0+1
  • Description: Aircraft struck motorcycle on runway while landing. Rider killed, minor damage to aircraft.

10 January

  • Aircraft: Piper PA-31-325 Navajo C/R
  • Location: Paipa, Colombia
  • Fatalities: 6
  • Description: Aircraft failed to climb after take-off and crashed.

17 January

  • Aircraft: ATR 42-500
  • Location: Mount Bulusaraung, South Sulawesi, Indonesia
  • Fatalities: 10
  • Description: Maritime patrol aircraft operated by Indonesian Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance flew into mountain while approaching destination. Initial FDR data recorded intermittent ‘degrade’ mode by GNSS, indicating compromised accuracy/integrity with maximum inaccuracy of 15 nm. Investigation continuing.

20 January

  • Aircraft: Robinson R44 Raven II
  • Location: Mount Aso, Japan
  • Fatalities: 3
  • Description: Sightseeing helicopter crashed near volcanic crater. First alert was from passenger’s phone registering impact.

25 January

  • Aircraft: Bombardier CL-600 Challenger 650
  • Location: Bangor International Airport, Maine, US
  • Fatalities: 6
  • Description: Business jet crashed on take-off of second leg of transatlantic flight from Texas to France. Aircraft had been refuelled, de-iced and treated with anti-ice fluid. Aircraft failed to climb, instead pitching up, rolling right and crashing. Time from start of anti-ice to stick shaker alert was 16 minutes. FAA holdover guideline for conditions is 9 minutes.

28 January

  • Aircraft: Learjet 45XR
  • Location: Baramati Airport, India
  • Fatalities: 5
  • Description: Aircraft crashed short of runway threshold on second approach to airport after go-around. CCTV footage shows snap roll to inverted on short final.

  • Aircraft: Beechcraft 1900D
  • Location: Near Ocaña Airport, Colombia
  • Fatalities: 15
  • Description: Scheduled passenger flight struck mountain at 6,800 feet during early descent phase of 20-minute flight.

9 February

  • Aircraft: AutoGyro MT 03 / AutoGyro MT 03
  • Location: Pointe des Châteaux, Guadeloupe
  • Fatalities: 2
  • Description: Tourist-carrying gyrocopters collided. One was able to land without casualties, other lost control and crashed.

11 February

  • Aircraft: MBB BK 117C-2 (Eurocopter EC145)
  • Location: Sancy Massif, France
  • Fatalities: 2
  • Description: Doctor and firefighter killed when hoist cable failed during training exercise.

19 February

  • Aircraft: Robinson R44 Raven II
  • Location: Amur region, Russia
  • Fatalities: 3
  • Description: Helicopter crashed soon after take-off. Investigation uncovered it was unregistered, with identification plates missing, and no flight plan had been filed.

21 February

  • Aircraft: ERJ-190LR
  • Location: Ouagadougou Airport, Burkina Faso
  • Fatalities: 0+1
  • Description: Ground crew member struck and killed during aircraft pushback.

23 February

  • Aircraft: Beechcraft C90A King Air
  • Location: Simariya, Jharkhand state, India
  • Fatalities: 7
  • Description: Emergency medical service aircraft crashed on landing attempt after making diversion due to weather.

6 March

  • Aircraft: Lancair Columbia 400
  • Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico, US
  • Fatalities: 2
  • Description: Private IFR flight reported engine trouble en route and struck tree on approach to emergency landing on golf course.

19 March

  • Aircraft: Pipistrel Velis Electro
  • Location: Poitiers-Biard Airport, France
  • Fatalities: 1
  • Description: Electric light sport aircraft failed to take off and crashed near runway.

22 March

  • Aircraft: Boeing 737 Max 8
  • Location: La Guardia Airport, New York, US
  • Fatalities: 0
  • Description: Aircraft made 2 rejected take-offs and reported fumes in cabin. Fire truck dispatched to aircraft collided with landing Bombardier CRJ.

22 March

  • Aircraft: Bombardier CRJ-900LR
  • Location: La Guardia Airport, New York, US
  • Fatalities: 2
  • Description: Air Canada flight from Montreal encountered fire truck on runway while landing. Pilots killed.

23 March

  • Aircraft: Robinson R44 Raven
  • Location: Boynton Beach, Florida, US
  • Fatalities: 2
  • Description: Helicopter crashed through roof of warehouse after experiencing engine trouble. Instructor and student killed.

26 March

  • Aircraft: Boeing 737 Max 8
  • Location: Washington-Dulles International Airport, Virginia, US
  • Fatalities: 0
  • Description: Person on ground seriously injured by jet blast during taxi for departure.
