Airport Safety Week 2026: Every action, every conversation, every airport

54

October means it’s Airport Safety Week. This year’s theme is, ‘every action, every conversation, every airport’ – exploring how the actions we take, the conversations we have and the discussions we hold can influence safety at airports.

When people work together, share information and support one another, potential hazards can be addressed before an incident or accident occurs.

Airport Safety Week is an annual campaign run by the Australian Airports Association to highlight and support the safety of airport staff and the communities they serve all around Australia, from large international airports to small regional airstrips.

The association will run webinars featuring industry experts to discuss these questions and provide resources that organisations can use to promote and build a collaborative, safe workplace at their airport.

Safety is a team effort

Safety at airports relies on more than procedures and systems. It is built through the small, everyday actions of the people who work in and around the aviation environment. Whether it is reporting a hazard, following established processes, raising a concern, or taking a moment to check that a task has been completed correctly, every action contributes to a safer operating environment.

Individually, these actions may seem minor, but together they play a critical role in preventing incidents and strengthening safety outcomes across the industry. Effective teamwork is essential to safety, ensuring risks are identified, communicated and managed before they develop into more serious issues.

It is crucial leaders in aviation environments demonstrate through their actions that safety is a shared responsibility and encourage staff to speak up when they identify a safety concern. By fostering an environment where concerns can be raised openly and without hesitation, employees can contribute their knowledge and experience, helping to continuously improve safety across the organisation.

By recognising that every conversation has the potential to make a difference, Airport Safety Week encourages us all to play an active role in keeping Australia’s airports safe.
